Considering I enjoy working through textbooks and have read many complaints about the examples in Introduction to Material Science for Engineers (7th ed.) by James F. Shackelford, I thought I would rewrite the solutions to make them easier for people to understand.

Don’t expect these to come quickly, I’m doing this in my spare time as and when I come across them.

Example 2.1

From appendix 1,

density of copper = 8.93 g/cm³

63.55 g of copper per mole

The Volume Sampled is,

V_Sample = π ((1×10^-6)÷2) × (1×10^-6) = 0.785×10^-12 m³

note: 1×10^-6 is the value of 1 μm in meters.

V_Sample in centimetres = (0.785×10^-12) ÷ (1×10⁶) = 0.785×10^-6 cm³

The Mass Sampled is,

M_Sample = 8.93 × (0.785×10^-6) = 7.010×10^-6 g

The number of moles of atoms in the sample is,

(7.010×10^-6) ÷ 63.55 = 1.103×10^-7 moles of Cu atoms

The Number of atoms in the sample is,

N_Sample = (0.6023×10²⁴) × (1.103×10^-7) = 6.64×10¹⁰ atoms in the Cu sample.

Example 2.2

This is self-explanatory with the sole exception of the converting 22.37 mm into 2.237 cm

Remember: density = mass ÷ volume

Example 2.3

From appendix 1,

density of Mg = 1.74 g/cm³

atomic mass of Mg = 24.31 g/mole

Volume of 1 mole of Mg,

V_Sample = 1.74 ÷ 24.31 = 13.97 cm³ per mole

Dimensions of a cube of 1 mole of Mg

edge of cube = ³√V_Sample

³√13.97 = 2.408 cm or 24.08 mm
